Pipi Universel

Pipi Universel

Pipi Universel, a 42-year-old artist from Argentina. I believe in self-taught practices and in the internet. I am on my own artistic mission, which is very random, but you will always find something related to memes, humanity, nature, or most commonly, nonsense. I like to explore still images, collages, gifs, video art, performance art, collaborations with other artists, and would love to do something related to cinema at some point in my life. Nowadays, I'm based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, splitting my time between the city and the farm in Tornquist. I would love to continue expanding my NFT work and travel to work and explore.

Could you share a bit about yourself? How old are you, where do you hail from, and what do you spend your days doing?
Pipi Universel
I'm a 42-year-old do-it-yourself artist. Worked in loads of different jobs not related to art and since 2016 I've only focused on art. Traditional illustration, some painting, I was a tattooer also and still I am but don't remember the last time I tattooed a client. I'm more focused nowadays on digital art, digital painting, gifs, video art, and specific collabs with other artists.

Fascinating! Are you primarily self-taught then? How did you first find your way into the art scene?
Pipi Universel
Self-taught but not all, I did study photography a bit, and I did some photography courses. I also studied graphic design so that helped me with the Adobe programs that are my 80% tools nowadays. I came into the art mostly because of my start in the tattoo world when I was living in Madrid in 2016, there it started more for real with real handmade illustration. I had a tattoo studio with two friends and worked on that for almost 2 years and a half and then I left and went back to Argentina where I started mining crypto but it went wrong and then I started trying with NFTs. The tattoo studio was when I was in Barcelona and the studio is still going and doing very well and it's managed by an English friend.

Why did you decide to do only art? Was there a specific moment or motivation behind this significant decision?
Pipi Universel
I didn't decide to do only art, I was searching for a job and at the same moment started doing art because I met a girl that was starting to tattoo and showed me her style and I liked it, it was because of this lover I had in Madrid. I started drawing (only line drawing) and started tattooing on myself also. I started drawing with the wacom and the computer and then moved to drawing with my hand and pencil or pen or whatever I had nearby.

You have a very interesting creative path. What's the name of the tattoo shop you mentioned? For those in Spain who might want to drop by.
Pipi Universel

Spain boasts a storied tradition in painting, with masters like El Greco, Velázquez, Picasso, and Dalí. Do any Spanish painters particularly resonate with you?
Pipi Universel
I like all of them, like a lot Francisco Goya.

Shifting the focus to your art, how would you describe the style that defines your work?
Pipi Universel
Random. Internet. My daily life. I take references from all of it, my main source is the Internet. I also use a lot of my daily footage, photos, and videos from my cell phone.

Over 1000 works on objkt.com in under two years! Your productivity is off the charts. It seems like you're constantly in creation mode. What drives this incredible motivation?
Pipi Universel
Money, I live from NFTs, so I need to produce. It's my job. I do it for money, I collect to resell. I try to work every day, yes.

Are there any specific AI artists you've collected that stand out to you?
Pipi Universel
I collect some of the AI art by nohygiene and ileigh. Then there are some that I like but are very expensive for me, like Frank Manzano. I can't remember much more. I remember that in Emprops there were some interesting ones but it's like they emulate almost to perfection old school artists (dead artists) and I nowadays don't like it. I prefer broken styles and errors.

I'm curious about your tattoos. Can you recall the first one you got? What was it, and how old were you at the time?
Pipi Universel
I did it when I was 17 years old, it was on my back, from an Argentinean rock band called Patricio Rey Y sus redonditos de ricota ( I highly recommend their music). It was very painful hahaha, like all of them. I'm fully tattooed, yes, but the crazy thing is that I made almost all of them in less than 3 years. And I'm a big boy, 1,94 meters, not easy to fill.

I recently came across a post by daniloxhema showcasing a tattoo of his NFT artwork. Have you thought about tattooing some of your work? That sounds like it could be an interesting experience.
Pipi Universel
I probably have one of this collection. Definitely have loads of phrases of my own also. It's a classic. I also probably have some of this collection. It is very important for me because it's all the designs I was offering as tattoos. And then decided to mint them and I sold them all and that gives me courage to go on with the NFT world.

WOW, that's incredible! I love seeing NFTs that are more than just digital tokens, especially those with connections to real-life stories. Imagine if two people met, one with the tattoo and the other owning the NFT. Shifting gears to soccer, Argentina's recent World Cup win, plus legends like Messi and Maradona, is impressive. Are you much of a soccer fan?
Pipi Universel
I'm a big fan. I used to play a lot and wanted to be pro but broke my ligaments and didn't fix well. I was a really very good defender. I think If I didn't have the injury I could have made it to the national team.

Clearly, you're a fan of the Argentina national team. But when it comes to club soccer, who do you root for?
Pipi Universel
It's football (haha) not soccer. The only people who call it soccer are Americans. I support Club Atletico River Plate. While I was living in Barcelona, Messi was playing and I supported Barcelona and also went to Camp Nou to watch him play, it was ridiculous. I think they won 6 vs 1 against Celta de Vigo.

Now for the big question: Messi or Maradona? Who's the greatest in your eyes?
Pipi Universel
For me it's Messi. No Doubt. Maradona had way more charisma though. But If I have to choose I go with Messi.
